A Concert Lecture with Julius von Bismarck, Jacky Austermann, Eve O’Donnell and Lea Luka Sikau.

This SciArt lecture and concert series showcases cutting-edge art collaborations at the intersection of science and culture. Two presentations on Sea Level Change and collaboration in music and science, by internationally renowned artist Julius von Bismarck and Earth scientist Jacky Austermann, Assistant Professor at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

This event is designed to showcase two cutting-edge projects that operate at the intersection of music and science, a virtual exploration of SciArt collaborative processes. These cases explore the importance of collaboration between interdisciplinary fields to develop innovative dissemination formats of scientific research, which have the potential to highlight issues surrounding sea level change, climate change, and sustainability.

Sponsored by the German Consulate General New York, and hosted by The Earth Institute, Columbia University, and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. The series is curated by SciSound Initiators Lea Luka Sikau and Eve O'Donnell.

Join them in this online concert, featuring a lecture on the scientific work and a Q&A.

About the Presenters

Julius von Bismarck, Artist

Internationally renowned artist and physicist Julius von Bismarck was awarded with the Prix Ars Electronica and was the first Artist in Residence at CERN. His projects have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale for Architecture, Art Basel, Palais de Tokyo and currently on display at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn (FEUER MIT FEUER). He exposed himself to centrifugal forces on a rapidly rotating disc, his Egocentric System, in order to question and manipulate his own and our perception. For his work Punishment, he has whipped the sea in Rio de Janeiro, the Statue of Liberty in New York and the mountains in the Alps. In the US he went hurricane hunting and has caught lightning in Venezuela, all to investigate the aesthetics of natural forces. In his current exhibition, FEUER MIT FEUER his artistic research into forest fires, is visualized in a multimedia installation, sound and sculptures. Images of our subconscious are thus evoked and the “psychoanalysis of fire” is presented in a powerful way.

Jacky Austermann, Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University

Jacky Austermann is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University and works on better understanding how sea level and ice sheets have changed over the past hundreds, thousands, and millions of years. The goal of her work is to elucidate properties and dynamics of Earth’s interior, understand the magnitude and rate of sea level change in response to warming temperatures, and unravel the interactions between solid Earth processes and the paleoclimate record over Earth’s geologic past. Austermann earned her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from Harvard University in 2016 and conducted a short postdoc at Cambridge University before joining Columbia University in 2018.
